2010 International Sculpture Symposium
A Shared Place for Creation
In 2010, we welcomed artists from China and abroad to the Jiuding Creative Camp for the First China (Tongling) International Copper Sculpture Exhibition. Here in Tongling, artists and our team shared ideas, developed models and worked through questions of scale, structure and materials. We brought our experience to the process, listened to each artist’s intentions and worked together to carry their ideas through to completed sculptures for the city.

Working Side by Side
Working side by side gave artists and our team time to discuss ideas, refine models and work through questions of proportion, structure and scale. There was also time to meet, talk and look at the works together. Sharing our experience and listening to different approaches helped us understand what mattered to each artist and support their decisions as a sculpture developed.
From Model to Sculpture
Moving from a small model to a full-scale sculpture meant looking carefully at proportion, structure and the character of each surface. Our team worked through modelling, casting, metalwork and finishing with the artist’s intentions in mind. At each stage, we paid attention to the details that gave the work its individual character.
From Workshop to Site
The same care continued on site, where our team guided the sculptures into position, aligned them with their foundations and made the final adjustments. Keeping the work moving required close coordination, with attention to both the schedule and the details of each installation. These final stages brought the sculptures from the workshop into Tongling’s public spaces.
